The Batmobile is arguably the most iconic fictional vehicle of all time. It has been around for almost as long as Batman, with its first appearance in 1941. Over all these years, the Batmobile has gone through various upgrades, and has evolved into a fully fledged weapon of badassery, becoming Batman's primary method of fighting crime in Gotham. Let's take a look at the different incarnations of the vehicle over the years. The Bat-Convertible The very first Batmobile was a simple, red convertible with a bat symbol in the front. It was merely used as a medium of transportation, and wasn't designed to fight crime. Adam West's Batmobile With a sleek design and a huge supply of bat-gadgets, Adam West's Batmobile was the first mainstream iteration of the car, which was used to help Batman fight crime in Gotham City. The Westmobile sported a black color with Batman's logo on the sides and on the wheels. It also contained some fins at the back in the shape of bat wings, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the car. Frank Miller's Bat-Tank This Batmobile was featured in one of the most famous comic books of all time — The Dark Knight Returns, featuring an older, retired Batman making his return to vigilantism. The comic, however, is most popular for the fight between DC's two titans, pitting the Caped Crusader against the Man of Steel. Bruce Wayne had designed and built this tank to be nearly impenetrable (Superman was the only one who could stand against this monstrous vehicle). This version of the Batmobile also included some heavy artillery as well as "rubber bullets" and a very well-equipped medical bay in case of emergencies. Tim Burton's Burtonmobile Taking inspiration from the '60s Batmobile, the big-screen debut of the vehicle had an extremely sleek and compact design. It had large fins at the back adding to the aesthetic look of the car and was fully black. This version of the Batmobile, featured in Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) also included twin machine guns, a grappling hook, and had a shield mode to protect it from external damage. The Batmobile (BTAS) Featuring in the popular cartoon Batman: The Animated Series, this version of the Batmobile was visually quite similar to Tim Burton's version. However, it added a few extra gadgets up its sleeves, with a missile rack, ejector seats for emergencies, and tear gas dispensers attached to the vehicle. Schumacher's... Whatever This WasAppearing in the less-than-stellar Batman Forever and Batman and Robin by Joel Schumacher, this iteration of the Batmobile consisted of an elaborate set of wings? Giant fins? I don't even know what those are. Anyway, the car was extremely unique, as it could be used to climb up the walls of buildings. I don't know how that works. It also had elaborate lighting around the wheels and the engine, making it glow in the dark. For reasons. Maybe that time and effort would have been better spent actually making a decent movie. Batman Beyond BatmobileProbably the most unique design out of the rest, this Batmobile is more like a hovercraft, considering that it appears in the futuristic world of the Batman Beyond cartoon. It is also extremely fast, able to achieve a velocity of Mach 3. Additionally, it possesses a cloaking device to go undetected, is noiseless, and has all sorts of gadgets up its sleeve. All in all a great, sleek, and innovative addition to the collection. The Tumbler Featuring in the highly popular Dark Knight Trilogy, the Tumbler was a fusion of a tank and a Lamborghini, designed for speed as well as durability for Nolan's incarnation of the Caped Crusader. Grounded in realism, it had heavy armour plating all over, making it resistant to heavy firepower, and it also included the Batpod (a bike of sorts), which could be ejected from the main vehicle if needed in case of intensive damage to the vehicle. Oh and yes, it does come in black. Snyder's Superman-busterLast but not the least, the latest iteration of this immensely popular vehicle appeared in this year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Just like the previous edition, this Batmobile is designed for agility as well as sturdiness, and is one of Batman's principle weapons in his fight against crime. Expect more unique features to be added to this Batmobile as the DCEU progresses further!
